'A day full of colour, paint and excitement! There's nothing that comes close to the energy these kids have, thank you Artreach for this opportunity.' Svabhu Kohli
ARTREACH INTENSIVES

Artists from across the world come to make art with children and young people from our partner care homes and schools.  Artists work individually or in teams, and can spend  from 3 days up to 3 months within one space. Exploratory drawing and painting sessions often lead to a co-created mural. The children love the process of mural making: the brainstorming of ideas, the development of a vision for their space,  the selection and transfer of images on to the wall, and finally the thrill of painting.   Then of course they get to live with their work.

More than fifty volunteer artists have worked with us, from the Miami School of Art, USA, and the Royal Drawing School in London; from  Ambedkar University and Delhi College of Art in India;  to established Indian artists such as Saba Hasan and Svabhu Kohli.

Each volunteer residency is managed with care and sensitivity so that the experience for all participants is transformative, something they will never forget.

... And if murals are not your thing our artists have led many other kinds of workshops including comic making, puppet making and charcoal drawing.

"The children immensely enjoyed working on the mural paintings and are very proud of their work. This hands-on experience also helped in teaching children about life skills such as team-work, the power of imagination, discipline, creativity, enthusiasm for learning new things, and some recognised their hidden talents. In spite of the constraints in space and resources the organisers put in their best to ensure that the project was done in a gentle, caring and collaborative manner, bringing out the best in all involved. The Artreach project has made a very positive impact on the children in our centres and we look forward to their continuing support in our work."

Like all of the kids, Hemant had only previously done art on paper, ‘I liked very much having the chance to paint on the walls and decorate my own space,’ he said. Chota Raju agreed. He loves ‘looking at my work every day’ and would like to learn more. Sonu Pradip was very excited about the project from the beginning, but he imagined something much smaller scale, ‘just one wall’. He was happy to see so many walls involved, ‘even outside,so in the winter when we sit, we can feel our work.

“The mural at the Jama Masjid Shelter was a unique artistic experience as we collaborated with kids and women who have a life completely apart from ours with often no art, and yet with colour I felt we could connect beautifully! Both days were filled to the brim with conversation and laughter, and somehow through it we ended up with a whole wall of art and many paintings on paper. I found it inspiring to have the kids express themselves so well through drawing, with no training at all.”
Ita Mehrotra, Artist at Urdu Park Shelter

"Nothing in life is more beautiful than colours, and colours that are spread by you on the wall of our home are even more beautiful because of the love and affection you have put in it.  We highly appreciate and admire your hard work and effort. YOUR PRESENCE GAVE OUR CHILDREN A SEA OF OPPORTUNITIES TO LEARN NEW THINGS ADN LOOK AT THINGS DIFFERENTLY. YOU HAVE INSPIRED THEM TO DO THINGS IN THEIR OWN WAYS. NOTHING COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER THAN THIS.  It was an honour to have you with us. Let there be many more such opportunities in the future."
